NEW INTERNATIONAL STADIUM CONFIRMED TO COME IN ERNAKULAM (COCHIN)

Now it is all confirmed that the New International Stadium will come up in kochi which will be owned by Kerala Cricket Association (KCA). It was confirmed by KCA Secretary T.C Mathew. KCA decided to have a stadium of its own as a part of BCCI decision not to conduct cricket matches after 2010 in those states which do not have stadium of its own. At present only Kerala, Tripura and Goa don't have a stadium of its own.

The stadium will be functional by 2010, after which Kochi will be a test venue;and it will be a dream come true for Kerala.

Earlier BCCI had decided to give Rs.25 crores as grant to construct stadium. But now the grant have been raised to Rs.50 crores considering the skyrocketing of prices in Kochi and its suburbs.
KCA can use up to Rs 25 crores to buy land. A land area of 40 acres is planned for the stadium so that the seating capacity can be up to 50,000. The stadium will have other most modern facilities like the Cricket Clubs and other recreational facilities matching with other international stadias abroad.

Earlier the cricket stadium was planned to build in Wayanad district. Then the plan was changed to build stadium in Thiruvananthapuram either in Kazhakuttam or in Kudapanakunnu considering Trivandrum's history of hosting international matches in 1980's in the University stadium.

University stadium was a regular venue for Ranji Trophy matches from 1953 onwards. The stadium which was constructed in 1952 was considered as the domestic ground of Kerala Cricket. By the end of 80’s cricket was shifted to other grounds. Now Fort Maidan in Palakkad is a regular venue for first class matches.

At some point of time it was thought that Kochi will lose the race for the stadium also to Trivandrum, like Kochi lost railway division in 1992 under political pressure to Trivandrum; Trivandrum Central was chosen over Cochin Harbour Terminus for the railway division under the political game, even when Trivandrum was much smaller station than the Cochin Harbour Terminus from where the most of the trains used to start. Now Cochin Harbour Terminus(picture shown) is a nostalgic event in the minds of keralites as here now only Goods Carriers arrive due to the presence of Cochin Port.

But considering the fact that Kochi has the best chance to attract Cricket due to past success had probably lead KCA to have their stadium in Ernakulam District.

A Glimpse of Cricketing History in Kerala:

Lord Arthur Wellesley is believed to have introduced this game in Kerala in the 18th century for the British Soldiers in the Tellichery Fort. It is recorded in the history that the first Cricket Club was formed in 1860 at Tellichery, which was later renamed as Town Cricket Club. During 1950s Foot ball took over the minds of north Keralites and cricket became an active game in Thiruvananthapuram and Thripoonithura. In Thripoonithura the royal family patronized the game very actively and formed a club - The Thripoonithura Cricket club in 1935. The Club started organizing a Cricket tournament as part of the Navarathri festival (Pooja festival, as it is locally known). The tournament continues un-interruptedly even on these days and still it is conducted during the Pooja holidays. It is popularly known as the Pooja Cricket Tournament and arguably one of the best organized all India tournaments in Kerala. They are probably the only Cricket Club in Kerala having their own stadium and turf Pitch. K V Kelappan Thampuran was the livewire behind the great achievements of TCC.

The International Matches held in Trivandrum(stadium shown here):

Two Matches held-
1) India vs Australia on Oct 1, 1984 - No Result

Some Facts on Kochi Stadium
:

Highest attendance for Match: India vs Iran football match of One Lakh!
Highest Money Grosser was : India vs Pakistan on April 2005.
An attendance of 85,000 reported in the last match held versus Australia in 2007.

Kochi Stadium is the Forth largest stadium in India:

1) Salt lake stadium, Kolkata - 120,000.
2) Eden Gardens, Kolkata - 120,000.
3) Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, New Delhi - 100,000.
4) Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, Kochi - 60,000.
5) Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore - 55,000.

KOCHI STADIUM IS THE THIRD LARGEST CRICKET STADIUM IN INDIA(from the above list, Salt lake is not a cricketing venue). (link)
(also this link)

Tit Bits:

As a matter of fact Kochi stadium is 157th largest stadium in the world and the chinnaswamy stadium, Bangalore is 200th largest.
(see the link)

The Maharaja's stadium in Ernakulam is the only stadium with synthetic track in Kerala. Although the stadium in Trivandrum was the first synthetic track stadium, it has been damaged now due to poor maintenance and it is not 8 lane as that of Kochi.

The KCA is on a hunt to get appropriate land of its own in Kochi for setting up a stadium.
Kochi is again proving that it is not only the Commercial, Industrial, Tourism and Trade capital of kerala but also the Cricket Capital of Kerala.(link)

Along with the major projects happening in Kochi, this stadium will also boost the importance of kochi.

Dude, check your facts on railways before posting.

Trivandrum railway division was formed in 1979 not in 1992 as you say. The new Trivandrum division paved the way for many long distance trains through the heartland of Kottayam and Alleppey thereby connecting Ernakulam and Trivandrum in the unified Kerala with the rest of country.

Rail Electrification to Cochin harbour terminus was objected by Indian Navy based in Cochin citing Venduruthy bridge as risk. Further developments were stalled thereafter for years pending case with Navy. By then, A new marshalling yard was built at Ernakulam south for stationing goods and passenger trains. All trains that came to Cochin had to be terminated at Ernakulam Junction. Later these trains were extended to Alleppey and Trivandrum Central for the benefit of more long distance passengers.

I sincerely apologise for the discrepancy and let me be precise that the division was formed in the year 1978 and not in 1979.

For your kind information, the extention of trains to TVM has nothing to do with formation of TVM division. Look, Hubli is the head for south western railways, but still Bangalore has more long distance trains than Hubli. hardly anyone know about Hubli.!!!

TVM division formation was due to politics. In 1978, railways shortlisted two stations, Cochin Harbour Terminus and Trivandrum Central to base the new division at. Ultimately, TVC won the race. Had the new division been set up in CHTS, the station would not have encountered its present fate. There was a huge uproar in the newspapers and the parliament due to the selection. Trivandrum was a much smaller station then.

You are absolutely wrong in your comment that Navy objected the electrification due to risk of Venduruthy bridge. But the Navy and the Civil Aviation Department objected due to the risks involved for the incoming and ongoing flights at the Cochin Airport. The electrification was thus done only till the Ernakulam Junction. The six-kilometre route from Ernakulam to Island was thereby left out and remained unelectrified. This sealed the fate of this terminus.

Those were the days when Cochin had the unique distinction of being the only place in the world where the harbour, railway station and the airport were strategically located within walking distance from the other. The booming of the ships, the puffing of the steam engines and the drone of the flights mingled vibrantly to make Willingdon Island the nerve centre, pulsating with activity.

The world has witnessed many a strange and unexpected happening in the past - all in the name of economic growth. So who knows maybe some day in the near future Cochin Harbour Terminus with the spurt in container traffic shall once more witness resurgence with the revival of passenger trains.

Upto now railways have active reservation counter in Cochin harbour terminus. In fact Kochi has most number of reservation counters in Kerala.

(I have quoted many things from the article written by Hemjit Bharathan in Hindu on jun 24, 2004. The web id is http://www.hinduonnet.com/mp/2004/06/24/stories/2004062401020100.htm)

I am also indebted to Mr. Jimmy Jose from whom I have quoted many points. (http://www.irfca.org/articles/jimmyjose-20031224-chts.html)

Today TVM is the most beautiful railway station in Kerala, it is also due to politics. The Ernakulam stations have rush far far higher than that of TVM. It is evident from a glance from railway station. Ernakulam station is far neglected in terms that it is the most important station in Kerala.

Thank you Vivek, for the many information you have provided on Cochin rail station. I sincerely wish Cochin station comes back alive as it used to be before.

I always used to enjoy my Cochin trip especially the view of harbour is really grand from the Subash park and the Marine drive. I look forward to my next trip to Cochin.

As for Bangalore/Hubli and Ernakulam/Trivandrum, the geagraphies are different. Most of long distance trains from Bangalore donot go through Hubli but through Guntakal or Jolarpet. Whereas in Kerala, being a long strip of area, all the long distance trains pass through Ernakulam to Trivandrum.

There is also heavy crowd in long distance trains from trivandrum, Quilon, Pathanamthitta and Kottayam
districts. You may have noticed that many long distance trains like Kerala exp, Island exp etc. are already crowded when the train reaches Ernakulam. Yes, the fact is there is huge passenger traffic from almost all districts in Kerala to other parts of country. Simply, we donot have enough long distance trains from Kerala to rest of India.

As for new division based in trivandrum in 1978, I was too young hence vaguely remember. Trivandrum was part of Madurai division and Ernakulam part of Palakkad division. There was a strong resistance from Trivandrum region to get out of Madurai division whereas there was not much known resistance from Ernakulam against Palakkad division. Central Government took areas out of Madurai divison and Palakkad division to form the new division based at Trivandrum.

As for railway amenities, I agree all major railway stations in Kerala (Trivandrum, Ernakulam, Kozhikode and Palakkad) badly need uplift. Recently DRM Trivandrum division said that Trivandrum central station is overutilised 2.5 times with severe space crunch.

As for passenger traffic, please note Trivandrum Central is slated third in Southern Railway after Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore in terms of passenger revenues.

The reason to shift the stadium from Trivandrum to Edakochi by the corrupt KCA and fraudulent secretary T.C.Mathew was just to embezzle money. Now we know what happened to Edakochi stadium and the stories behind it. KCA and T.C.Mathew is under vigilance investigation.

The puerile statement like the only synthetic track in Kerala is in Maharaja's college ground and the synthetic track in university stadium S DAMAGED is ludicrous! Mr.Shenoy please come to University stadium and have a look at the track. And also Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE), Kariavattom in Trivandrum also have a synthetic track. Get your facts right before you puke these stupidities!
